One word for this wee gem - Awesome!!!!

Reviewer: JoeCool,
I have a Canon EOS 400D DSLR and it is an amazing piece of kit. The wee Canon ixus 980 adds a new dimension. The EOS is brilliant for planned photographic projects but the ixus is awesome for catching the 'moment' and boy does it catch that 'moment'. The quality on detail and colour is spectacular for such a little chap!

I use it for weddings, wildlife and virtually any snaps I want to take when out and about. It has as many options as most DSLRs and it is a cool black instead of gold, silver, flourescent green/blue/red, smokey silver or champagne colour, as many little ones are!

Buy it and have fun!!!

But do love it and care for it!
Maybe I have a duff one?

I don't get it! Why all these 5 star reviews? OK, it works, it is very clever, has a high pixel count, lots of facilities OR you can just use it on AUTO and it is point and shoot simplicity.

What I primarily want from a camera is sharp pictures and they are not. Well, sometimes they are sharp, if conditions are perfect, but most of the time they are mediocre. At this price, that is not good enough. Make sure you try it in the shop before parting with all that dosh. There are much cheaper compact cameras which do a better job.

I chose this one because it is one of very few these days that has a viewfinder. Unfortunately, the viewfinder does not cover the same area as the screen and it does not give any indication that you have zoomed in beyond the optical zoom range.

In case you think I am misusing it I have many years experience with professional camera systems, large format, 35mm and digital. From my personal experience I would check out the Panasonic range.

Not a Value choice - better cameras there for less

I have chosen this camera as my birthday present last June after researching slightly better cameras, and I am dissapointed.
I must say that I was pleased with the first trip - France, beatiful sunny weather, and country - hence, nice pictures.
However when it comes to indoors pictures or if little cloudy weather the colours are not very nice at all, and the settings are not as easy to work out as my prevous Ixus
Basically I was looking for an upgrade and go downgraded. Its ok, it will still take ok pictures, but if you go for the canon "cheaper version" you would not sacrifice in quality at all!
Also, took it onto recent holiday in Thailand and despite making sure the camera is in shade and protected it got extremely hot due to its "plastic like black" and the zoom did not work properly at all including the setting button.
Great pocket camera

Reviewer: G. Chaplin,
This is my fourth digital IXUS and has proved to be an excellent choice as a backup camera to my Canon 40D SLR. The quality of the images is excellent - even in low light. I haven't used it much in Manual mode preferring to leave it in Program mode. This gives great control and flexibility. Auto seems to be pretty good as well and can happily be used for Point `n Shoot. Generally focus is good and fast, but like most compact cameras is a bit slow in low light. The face detect feature really works well and I especially like the magnified image when a face is detected.

The flash output is a bit weak, but probably is to be expected given its size - it's OK as a fill-in it the daylight is not too good. For indoor shots, it's best to put the came on a stable platform and use a long exposure unless the subject is very near.

Movies are excellent and in .MOV format - not AVI as I was expecting from my previous Canon IXUS cameras.

No plans to change in the near future.
amazing wo-oh!!

this camera is actually wonderful, other reviews have said it is not a travel camera or that it is easily broken. honestly i think this is rubish: im 14 years old and pretty much drop this camera every time i use it; it has been drenched in j20 and landed from a height of 3 metres onto solid pavement lens down and it remains as good as new. admitedly it is about as scratched up as it gets but the digital aspects are as perfect as the day they arrived. mine can take half hour to recharge and that lasts a good two weaks (a month in some cases). if used on the correct setting the pictures are crystal clear, face recognition is very helpfull and colour change, cropping, video editing are all posible immediately after taking the shot. i still havent decided whether the curvy design is sophis or jus tacky but most of my friends really like it. honestly amazons prices are quite a bit higher then some other retailers but im sure a good well known seller is advisable. macro isnt the best ive ever seen en sometimes makes the image worse, maybe im using it wrong, but if your looking for a sturdy every occasion camera this is the one to choose. a waterproof case is also sold from amazon a tad pricey though. YOU SHOULD BUY THIS CAMERA
